Thinning of hardwood crops is very specialised and needs to be completed on time in the best interest of the crop. Motor manual harvesting combined with forwarder extraction is the method favoured by Forestry Services ltd. in the thinning of hardwoods. This is to ensure no damage to the remaining crop, which can occur in mechanical harvesting.
The timber extracted from the first thinning of hardwoods is normally used for firewood and/or biomass. This is a growth area at present and is set to expand significantly in the future.
The Forest Service have recently introduced a hardwood thinning grant of €750/ha to encourage owners to thin crops.
Thinning of hardwood crops can commence at year 12 depending on quality with subsequent thinning normally conducted at 5-year intervals.
